More apartments planned for Hamilton’s Main Street, continuing boost in downtown housing
Eight more upscale apartments are planned for Hamilton’s Main Street entertainment corridor, this time in the 100 block. That will increase the recent growth of apartments and businesses in the area.
Hamilton-based Becco Homes, which owns the buildings at 107 Main St. and 117 Main St., is receiving $153,706 in city matching grants to upgrade the apartments, which are located in the upper floors of the buildings that house the Preferred Puppies and Petals & Wicks shops.
The money will be used “to take the apartments to a higher level,” said Mallory Greenham, a small-business development specialist for the city. “So there will be an additional eight really nice, market-rate residential units there.”

A morning fire in a New Miami house that lacked electricity killed a man, officials said this afternoon.
New Miami Assistant Fire Chief Jim Lakes said the state fire marshal’s office was unable to determine a cause of the blaze in the 1500 block of North B Street, which was reported at 7:02 a.m.
But Lakes said he guessed the fire may have been caused by a space heater, which was using electricity run through an extension cord from a nearby property. The house was filled with probably more than a dozen lawnmowers, as well as motorcycles and snow blowers, he said.

Miami will keep SAT, ACT scores optional for admissions
Miami University is extending its new policy of making SAT and ACT exams optional for new student admission due to the coronavirus pandemic, school officials announced today.
The extension will impact first-year applicants seeking admission starting fall of 2022 and spring 2023.
Miami officials said their admissions approach in recent years had already incorporated a more “holistic approach” that decreased the weight of SAT and ACT test scores prior to the onset of the coronavirus in March 2020.

Miami grads get half-million dollar investment on ‘Shark Tank’
Two Miami University graduates and entrepreneurs made their pitches last week before a national television audience on the show Shark Tank and reeled in a half-million dollar investment from high-profile businessman Mark Cuban.
The 2019 finance majors from Miami – both natives of Ohio – told the Journal-News they were thrilled with the high-pressure sales opportunity filmed in Las Vegas and broadcast last Friday evening on ABC.
Their Mad Rabbit Tattoo company, which sells natural ingredient post tattoo skin products designed to promote healing while also enhancing a tattoo’s appearance, impressed Cuban enough for him to sign on as a financial backer.
